Our Areas of Practice
Geologic evaluation
Upstream conducts geologic mapping and assessment throughout a wide range of geologic terrains and mineral resources. Our skills are best developed in sedimentary and meta-sedimentary rocks, laterite, granitic terrains, surface and subsurface fluids and gases.
- Basin analysis
- Metallogenic study
- Sedimentary, chemical sedimentary, & sediment-hosted ore deposits
- Brine, including geothermal
- Laterite
- Orogenic gold
- Granite, skarn, carbonatite
Data acquisition
Upstream has a reputation for design and execution of definitive data acquistion programs. Our programs fulfill the needs of immediate users but also looks to lateral and future stakeholders to ensure completeness and applicability in data collection.
- Remote & challenging field operations
- Petrophysical logging
- Borehole seismic
- Baseline studies
- Driling & coring: specialized & conventional programs - evaporite coring, very-large diameter core, long-reach directional, borehole intersection
Resource evaluation
Upstream performs comprehensive evaluations that begins with thorough data validation and reduction. Evaluation is conducted in concert with mining and processing engineers, marketing experts, and socio-environmental experts to ensure efficient transition to project delivery.
- GIS & 3D modeling
- Geochemical data evaluation
- Metallurgical testing
- Process design & product validation
Project delivery
Upstream is experienced in project execution from inception to hand-back to the client. Project delivery begins with bridging to the client to ensure safety, governance, cost control, and technical requirements are clearly defined and performance metrics are clearly defined.
- Owner representation
- Project execution & management
- Design - build - operate
- Risk management
Stakeholder support
Upstream provides independent assistance to stakeholders seeking to understand and communicate their position and concerns to other stakeholders. This usually involves review and discussion of technical reports; information validation; assessment of issues and options; preparing questions and comments; and facilitating discussions.
Our strategy is named CHESS, an acronym for integrating:
Community - Health - Environment - Safety - Security
- CHESS strategy
- Community relations & representation
- Environmental baseline study and evaluation
- Cultural fluency
- Policy development
- Negotiation
- Consulting & advising
- Data & IP protection
Capacity building
Upstream's work can be positioned to bridge gaps in your organization's skills or extend your core capabilities. This can be for an interim basis or part of a permanent growth strategy. A key trait of our approach is that we can provide personnel (or secondment of your staff) who stay with the project until your decision point. If the project goes forward, the personnel may move into your organization thereby assuring you retain intellectual property and historical memory. We also fill training, coaching, consulting and advisory roles to technical and non-technical individuals and groups in government, NGOs, mid- and end-market consumers.
- Secondement
- Technical training
- Internship
- Mentorship
Markets & supply chains
Upstream supports mid- & end-market users in achieving confidence in supply intelligence and by creating resiliency in their supply chains. We believe users need to come upstream but appreciate that they do not want to become miners. Our value to users is in providing relevant intelligence and supporting their 'seat at the table' of a mining or processing investment.
- Fertilizers N, P, K, S
- Chemical feedstocks
- Technology metals
- Specialized sectors (He, H2)
- New & novel sources of supply
- Market intelligence
- Pre-entry risk & readiness
Applied R & D
Upstream has strong roots in scientific research and a track record for developing innovative solutions to barriers and inefficiencies in mineral resource evaluation, extraction, processing, and marketing. Our value to clients comes from our providing an enabling tool, process, or technology that creates a tactical advantage or a path to commercialization.
- Petrography
- Isotope studies
- Technology adaptation
- Process innovation
- Product innovation
